HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

8.18. 2008 was the 94th birthday of my grandma Miyoko Nakayama. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDMA! It was also the opening day of the MIYOKOS gallery at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort in Hilo, Hawaii. It was a goal of mine to open the gallery on her birthday so with the help of my niece Ashley and Matt we were hard at work to get the place finished. The gallery is open by appointment. Please see the front desk at the hotel or call 310.278.2787.

Event: Art on the Avenue

“Art on the Avenue” was a fun-filled week at the Wyland Waikiki Resort and Spa on Oahu. A childhood dream of mine came true when I had the opportunity to meet Wyland before he jetted off to the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China as the artist representing the United States. Wyland inspired me as a kid to paint the ocean and he is still inspiring me today with what he is doing with his art and for children. Check out his website at www.wylandfoundation.org.

Carl Lindstrom and I had a blast painting on surfboards shaped and donated by master shaper Keoki Ching of Honolulu. Keoki is such a down to earth, super fun guy who is a brilliant shaper and human being-thanks Keoki! The boards will be auctioned off next year to raise money for art scholarships for the youth. For more information please contact poiplanet@mac.com.

The opening reception was like a family reunion as all our friends and family came out to support us-Thank you so much! A very special thank you to Wyland, Robin Graf, Stacy Keen and Sueann Wells and the staff of the Wyland Waikiki Resort and Spa for supporting artists and creating this event. To Tracy Larrua and Justin Yoshino for making this opportunity possible and for working above and beyond what we could have imagined-THANK YOU!. To Keoki Ching for donating the awesome surfboards! To KHON channel 2 news for giving us the opportunity to share our event on the news-Thank you!
